Siquijor from Cebu: how to get there, and what to do when you land

The short version: it got much easier in December 2025

Siquijor is its own island province and Cebu does not connect to it by road, so something has to cross the water. For years that meant the route through Negros - drive to the southern tip of Cebu, cross the narrow strait to the Dumaguete side, then a second boat out to Siquijor - three legs and two timetables in one journey. It is still a good route, and it is the only one that lets you put Oslob or Moalboal in the middle of it.

It is no longer the only one, and that is the thing worth knowing before you plan. Sunlight Air opened a non-stop Mactan-Cebu to Siquijor flight on 15 December 2025, about 55 minutes on an ATR 72, using the island's upgraded airport. OceanJet runs a daily passenger fastcraft that leaves Cebu, calls at Tagbilaran in Bohol and continues to Siquijor town port on a single ticket in roughly 4 to 4.5 hours. And a slower RORO has always gone straight from Cebu Pier 3 to Larena overnight, which is the option that carries a vehicle.

Whichever you take, the ticket is yours to book - with the airline, or paid at the pier - so it sits outside any transfer quote. What we drive is the Cebu-side leg: your hotel or arrivals gate to the airport, to Pier 1, to Pier 3, or the full run south to Liloan timed to your sailing.

The overland route via Dumaguete, leg by leg

This was the standard route for years and it is still the one to take if you want the coast on the way. It is also the only one that needs a long transfer, so it is the one we time most carefully.

• Leg 1 - Cebu City or the airport down to Liloan port

  About 150 km and 3.5 to 4.5 hours from Cebu City, or roughly 165 km and 4 to 5 hours from Mactan-Cebu Airport, running down the east-coast highway through Carcar, Argao and Oslob to Liloan port at Santander, Cebu’s southern tip.

• Leg 2 - Liloan to Sibulan

  A short public crossing of about 20 to 30 minutes to Sibulan, just north of Dumaguete. Nine RORO sailings each way plus a passenger fast craft - but the daytime RORO boats are three hours apart, and you have a second crossing to Siquijor after it, so this is the gap that sets the day. Then a short ride round to Dumaguete’s ferry port.

• Leg 3 - Dumaguete to Siquijor

  A separate fast craft of roughly 45 minutes to an hour, run by operators such as OceanJet and Montenegro Lines, landing at Siquijor town port or at Larena. Several sailings run daily; times shift with season and weather.

• Or skip all three - fly

  Sunlight Air goes Mactan-Cebu to Siquijor non-stop in about 55 minutes, flying since 15 December 2025. Reported as four days a week at launch and three on the airline's own current page, so confirm the day before you plan around it.

• Or skip all three - OceanJet fastcraft

  A daily passenger fastcraft from Cebu that calls at Tagbilaran in Bohol and carries on to Siquijor town port, roughly 4 to 4.5 hours on one ticket with no change of vessel. Passengers only, so no cars or motorbikes.

• Or skip all three - the overnight RORO

  Lite Ferries leaves Cebu Pier 3 at 1:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and reaches Larena around 11:00 PM, roughly 10 hours; Starlite runs an overnight twice a week. Slow, but the only sea route that takes a vehicle.

• Which port you land at matters

  OceanJet lands at Siquijor town port on the south-west side, Lite Ferries at Larena on the north-east, and they are about 45 minutes apart by road. Pick the crossing that suits where you are staying, not the other way round.

How long it actually takes, and the DIY option

Counted end to end, the overland route is most of a day: 3.5 to 4.5 hours of driving, a 20 to 30 minute crossing, a hop round to Dumaguete port, then 45 minutes to an hour at sea, plus whatever waiting falls between the two sailings. Traffic, a lunch stop and ferry timing all move the total, so build in slack rather than planning to the minute. For comparison, the OceanJet fastcraft is about 4 to 4.5 hours door to pier and the direct flight is about 55 minutes - which is the whole argument for checking those first.

You can do it entirely on public transport. A Ceres bus runs from the Cebu South Bus Terminal down to Liloan port and rolls onto the barge to Sibulan - board the service signed “Bato via Oslob” for the east coast, not “Bato via Barili”, which takes the opposite coast to the same terminus, and from there you make your own way to Dumaguete port for the Siquijor boat, typically around 6 to 7 hours all in. It is much the cheapest way and perfectly doable, but it is a long stretch of fixed timetables and connections with your luggage, and a missed sailing is yours to absorb.

The private alternative only replaces the road leg: a car or van collects you at your hotel door or at arrivals and runs you straight to Liloan, timed to a sailing so the connection is comfortable. You still buy the two ferry tickets at the port yourself.

What to do on Siquijor

The island is small enough to loop on its single coastal road, and that loop is the trip. Nothing here is a big-ticket attraction; the pleasure is the pace.

• Cambugahay Falls

  A three-tier jungle waterfall near Lazi with turquoise catch pools and a rope swing, reached by a short walk down around 100 steps.

• The old Balete Tree

  A roughly 400-year-old balete tree growing over a natural spring, with a shallow pool at its base where small fish nibble your feet.

• Salagdoong Beach

  A white-sand cove fringed by forest, with cliff platforms for jumping into the sea, the higher one at around 9 metres.

• Paliton Beach

  A quiet white-sand beach on the west coast near San Juan, known for its sunsets and easy swimming.

• St. Isidore Labrador Church, Lazi

  A 19th-century coral-stone church with a large Spanish-era convent opposite, both worth a look inside and out.

The healers, and the reputation

Siquijor’s association with witchcraft is the thing people ask about most, and it should not keep anyone away. The reality behind it is the mananambal: traditional folk healers who practise herbal medicine passed down through generations, and who are most visible each Holy Week at the Healing Festival on Mt. Bandilaan, where healers gather to prepare their remedies.

It is a genuine and living local tradition rather than anything a visitor needs to be wary of. In practice Siquijor is one of the calmest, most easygoing islands in the Visayas, with light traffic and a quiet, rural feel.

How many days, and when to go

Treat Siquijor as an overnight at minimum. The direct flight makes a day trip genuinely possible on the days it runs, which was not true before December 2025 - but by sea it remains a mistake, because a long drive and two crossings in each direction spends the day travelling and shows you almost none of the island. Two nights lets you do the coastal loop, the falls and a beach without watching the clock, and it is a natural pairing with Dumaguete or Apo Island on the Negros side.

The dry season, roughly March to May, gives the calmest crossings and the most reliable sailings. Holy Week is the exception worth planning for deliberately: it is when the Healing Festival happens on Mt. Bandilaan, and also the island’s busiest week, so ferries and rooms need booking well ahead. Sailings can be reduced or paused in rough weather at any time of year, so keep some flexibility around ferry times.

Getting the Cebu leg right

On the overland route the whole journey hinges on the first leg. Reach Liloan with time in hand and the rest of the day unfolds calmly; arrive late and you are waiting on the next sailing with the Dumaguete connection slipping away behind it. On the flight and the two direct boats the road leg is short, but it still has a deadline attached.
