Cebu’s calendar has a few big dates that are worth planning around, either to join the celebration or to avoid the crush. The biggest by far is Sinulog.
Sinulog (January)
Held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, one of the largest festivals in the Philippines, honouring the Santo Nino with a grand street parade. Expect packed hotels, road closures and a brilliant atmosphere; book accommodation and your airport transfer months ahead.
Holy Week (March or April)
The Easter period is a major national holiday. The weather is great but ferries, resorts and roads get busy, so reserve ahead and allow extra travel time.
Lapu-Lapu Day and Kadaugan sa Mactan (27 April)
A national holiday marking the 1521 Battle of Mactan, with a battle re-enactment staged at the Mactan Shrine near the airport. The shrine itself is worth a quiet visit any time of year, not just on the day.
Christmas and New Year (December)
Festive and busy, with peak-season prices, especially out on the islands. Lovely if you plan early.
