When is the best time to visit Cebu?

Short answer

The best time to visit Cebu is the dry season, roughly December to May, when days are sunny and the sea is calm for island hopping. January to April is the sweet spot, and January adds the huge Sinulog festival. June to November is greener, quieter and better value, with warm rain that usually falls in short bursts.

Dry season, peak

Cooler, dry and sunny, and the most popular window. Book beaches and drivers early, especially over Christmas, New Year and the January Sinulog weekend.

March to May

Dry season, hot

The hottest, driest months and prime beach and diving weather. Holy Week (the Easter period) is a big local holiday, so ferries, resorts and roads get busy.

June to August

Start of the wet season

Warmer sea, greener hills and thinner crowds. Rain often comes in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, and prices soften.

September to November

Wet season

The wettest stretch and the heart of typhoon season across the Philippines. Cebu is not out of reach: Typhoon Tino brought record flash flooding in November 2025. Keep plans flexible and watch ferry advisories.

The two seasons, simply

Cebu has a dry season and a wet season rather than four distinct seasons, and it stays warm throughout. The main thing to weigh up is sunshine and sea conditions against crowds and price.

Dry season (December to May)
Sunny days and calm, clear seas, the best window for island hopping and diving. Crowds and prices peak from mid-December through the New Year and again around Holy Week.
Wet season (June to November)
Green landscapes, warm rain often in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, quieter beaches and better value. Pack a light rain layer and leave a buffer day for ferries.
Temperature
Warm year-round, generally around 24 to 32 C by day. It rarely feels cold; the highlands around Osmena Peak and Busay are the coolest spots.

A few big dates are worth planning around, to join the celebration or to avoid the crush. The biggest by far is Sinulog.

Festival and holiday dates, next 12 months

Sinulog (January)
Held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, one of the largest festivals in the Philippines, honouring the Santo Nino with a grand street parade. Expect packed hotels, road closures and a brilliant atmosphere; book accommodation and your airport transfer months ahead.
Holy Week (March or April)
Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are national holidays. The weather is great but ferries, resorts and roads get busy, so reserve ahead and allow extra travel time.
Lapu-Lapu Day and Kadaugan sa Mactan (27 April)
Marks the 1521 Battle of Mactan, with a re-enactment at the Mactan Shrine near the airport. A non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City, a normal working day elsewhere. The shrine is worth a quiet visit any time of year.
Christmas and New Year (December)
Festive and busy, with peak-season prices, especially out on the islands. Lovely if you plan early.

What is the best month to visit Cebu?

For reliable sun and calm seas, aim for January to April, the heart of the dry season. January is especially lively thanks to the Sinulog festival, though it is also the busiest. If you prefer quiet beaches and lower prices, the wetter months of June to November are still warm and often see only short bursts of rain.

Does it rain a lot in Cebu?

Cebu is tropical, so expect some rain year-round, but the dry season from about December to May is mostly sunny. The wetter season, roughly June to November, brings more frequent showers, often in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day rain. September to November is the wettest and overlaps with the wider Philippine typhoon season.

Is Cebu affected by typhoons?

Yes. Typhoon season across the Philippines runs mainly from June to November, but storms can arrive outside it, and Cebu is not out of reach. Typhoon Odette (Rai) made landfall at Carcar in southern Cebu in December 2021, and Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) brought record flash flooding to Cebu City, Mandaue, Liloan and Talisay in November 2025; both led to a state of calamity in the province. If you travel between June and December, keep your itinerary flexible, avoid tight ferry connections when a storm is named, and follow PAGASA and coast guard advisories. When is Sinulog and should I plan around it?

Sinulog is held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, making the next edition Sunday 17 January 2027, and is one of the biggest festivals in the country. It is a wonderful time to visit, but hotels fill months ahead, city roads close for the parade and everything is busier. If you are coming for it, book accommodation and your airport transfer early and allow extra time for city travel that weekend.

Is the sea good for island hopping all year?

The sea is calmest and clearest in the dry season, December to May, which is prime time for island hopping around Bantayan, Malapascua and the Camotes. It is still possible in the wet season, but crossings can be choppier and are occasionally cancelled in bad weather, so a flexible plan helps.
