Camotes Islands, Cebu’s quiet island escape

The Camotes Islands are a small, laid-back group off Cebu’s north-east coast, made up of Pacijan, Poro and Ponson. They are known for pale-sand beaches, warm shallow water and an unhurried pace that feels a world away from the city, yet the whole group sits close enough to be a comfortable overnight or long-weekend trip. Most resorts are around Santiago Bay and Mangodlong on Pacijan, reached across the causeway from the ferry port on Poro.

Dry season (roughly March to May) for the calmest sea and the smoothest ferry crossing; weekdays are quietest. Sailings can be reduced or paused in rough weather, so keep some flexibility around ferry times.

There is no bridge to Camotes, so every visit includes a sea crossing: you drive north to Danao City port, about 35 km and 1 to 1.5 hours from Cebu City (or 30 to 40 km, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from Mactan airport), then take the Danao to Consuelo roll-on-roll-off ferry, which runs several times a day and takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. Because ferry times shift with the season and the weather, the trip works best when the road leg is timed to a confirmed sailing. Cebu.travel arranges a private car or van straight to the terminal so you reach it relaxed and with time to check in.

How to get to Camotes Islands from Cebu City & the airport

  • Private transfer to Danao port (what we arrange)~45 min-1.5 hrs

A private car or van door-to-door from your hotel or the airport to the Danao ferry terminal, timed to your sailing so you skip the North Bus Terminal and the luggage scramble. Request a quote for the fixed fare; we can also help arrange onward transport on Camotes.

  • Danao → Consuelo RORO ferry~2-2.5 hrs

The crossing every route shares: a roll-on-roll-off ferry from Danao to Consuelo port on Poro Island, several sailings a day, inexpensive public fare paid at the port. Times change with weather and season, so confirm before you travel.

  • Ceres bus to Danao (public)~1.5-2 hrs to Danao

A Ceres bus from Cebu’s North Bus Terminal to Danao, then the ferry. Cheapest, but a terminal transfer, luggage limits and the risk of missing a sailing.

The still, forest-ringed water of Lake Danao on the Camotes Islands, Cebu

What to expect

Santiago Bay white sand

A long, gentle beach on Pacijan near San Francisco, where most of the island’s resorts and the classic Camotes sunset views are.

Lake Danao

A large, calm inland lake shaped a little like a figure eight, popular for kayaking, paddle boats and a quiet lakeside loop.

Timubo & Bukilat caves

Freshwater cave pools you can swim in: Timubo on Pacijan and Bukilat on Poro are the best known, both handled locally with a small entry fee.

Mangodlong & Buho Rock

The rocky, coconut-fringed coast around Mangodlong, with the Buho Rock cliff-jump and dive platforms, is one of Camotes’ signature spots.

Camotes Islands: frequently asked questions

How do you get to the Camotes Islands from Cebu?

Drive north to Danao City port (about 35 km, 1 to 1.5 hours from Cebu City, or 30 to 40 km from Mactan airport), then take the Danao to Consuelo roll-on-roll-off ferry to Poro Island (about 2 to 2.5 hours). There is no bridge to Camotes, so the ferry is part of every trip. Cebu.travel arranges a private transfer timed to your sailing - request a quote.

How long does the Camotes ferry take, and how often does it run?

The Danao to Consuelo ferry takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and has several sailings through the day, with the last in the afternoon or early evening. Exact times change with the season and weather, so confirm the current schedule close to your travel date and check in at least 30 minutes before departure.

What is there to do on the Camotes Islands?

The highlights are Santiago Bay’s white-sand beach, Lake Danao for kayaking and paddle boats, the freshwater Timubo and Bukilat caves, and the rocky Mangodlong coast with the Buho Rock cliff jump. It is a quiet, slow-paced escape rather than a party island, which is much of its appeal.

How many days do you need for Camotes?

Because the ferry crossing eats into travel time, most people stay at least one night rather than day-tripping. Two nights is comfortable to see the beaches, Lake Danao and a cave or two without rushing. Tell us your dates and we will time the transfers around the ferries at each end.

Landed at midnight and our driver was right there with a sign. Smooth ride to Moalboal and the price was exactly as quoted. So much less stressful than sorting it at the airport.
