The shifting white sandbar of Sumilon Island off Oslob, Cebu
Off Oslob, south-east Cebu

Sumilon Island sandbar

Sumilon is a small island just off Oslob on Cebu’s south-east coast, ringed by clear water and best known for its shifting white sandbar and protected marine sanctuary. It’s reached by a short banca ride from the Bancogon jetty near Oslob, so the journey is essentially the same 3-3.5 hour drive south as the whale sharks.

From Cebu City
~120 km to Oslob + short boat
3-3.5 hours by car to Oslob, then a short boat
From Mactan airport
~125 km to Oslob + boat
3.5-4 hours from Mactan
Region
Off Oslob, south-east Cebu
Best time
See below
Dry season (roughly March-May) for the calmest water and clearest sandbar; the bar’s size shifts with the tide.

That’s exactly why Sumilon is most often visited on the same trip as the Oslob whale sharks and Tumalog Falls - an early start covers all three. A private car with a waiting driver makes the day-trip combination realistic from the city.

How to get to Sumilon Island from Cebu City & the airport

  • Private transfer to Oslob/Bancogon (what we arrange)~3-3.5 hrs

A private car south to the Bancogon jetty area, timed for an early start and easily combined with the whale sharks and Tumalog Falls. Request a quote for the fixed fare.

  • Bancogon → Sumilon boat~short hop

The resort’s own boat, leaving Bangcogon at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM and returning at 9:00 and 11:00 AM, 1:00, 3:00 and 4:30 PM. Day visitors reserve a Bluewater day-use pass in advance, which covers transfers between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. There is no public banca to flag down at the jetty.

What to expect

The shifting sandbar

A bright white sandbar that changes shape with the tides - the island’s signature view.

Marine sanctuary

Protected reefs make for clear-water snorkelling around the island.

Combine with Oslob

Same route as the whale sharks and Tumalog Falls - the classic south-east trio in one day.

Short boat hop

Reached by the resort boat from Bangcogon jetty, on a fixed schedule between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Day passes are reserved in advance, not bought at the jetty.

Best time to visit

Dry season (roughly March-May) for the calmest water and clearest sandbar; the bar’s size shifts with the tide.

When Sumilon Island is open, and what to expect at the gate

There is only one way across
Sumilon is privately run by Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort, and the boat from the mainland jetty at Bangcogon is the resort’s own. There is no public banca you can flag down at the jetty, so this is not a stop you can improvise on the day
You have to book before you travel
Day visitors need a day-use pass reserved in advance with the resort. Walk-ups are not the arrangement, boat space is capacity-limited, and on weekends and public holidays boarding is first come, first served even with a pass
Boats to the island
8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM from Bangcogon. The crossing is about 15 minutes in calm weather and nearer 30 in the rainy months
Boats back to the mainland
9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. The day-use pass covers transfers between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, so a day visitor should plan on the 3:00 PM as the last boat off the island
Be at the jetty early
At least 15 minutes before your boat, and the day-pass terms ask for an hour before the 8:00 AM first sailing. Bring photo ID - the resort checks it before you board
The Wednesday closure
The sandbar, which is the reason most people come, closes for cleaning under an LGU Oslob rehabilitation rule. Sources disagree on whether that is every Wednesday or only the third of the month, so treat any Wednesday as a risk and confirm the date when you reserve
Which boat pairs with the whale sharks
The 10:00 AM. Whale-shark watching at Tan-awan opens at 6:00 AM and is about 30 minutes on the water, so an early slot has you finished with time to reach Bangcogon for a 10:00 AM boat. The 8:00 AM boat does not combine - you would need to be at the jetty before the interaction is over
  • What the choice of return boat actually costs you. Off the 10:00 AM crossing, the 1:00 PM boat back leaves the afternoon free for Tumalog Falls and a stop or two on the drive north; the 3:00 PM boat gives you the full island day but the rest of the south is gone. That is the real trade behind "can I fit both Sumilon and Tumalog", and it is a choice about the return boat, not about the drive.
  • If your whale-shark slot runs late, the 12:00 noon boat still works - registration at Tan-awan closes at 11:00 AM - but then the 3:00 PM return is only about three hours on the island. Tell us which boat you want to make and we time the pickup back from it.
  • The pass and the boat are the resort’s, not ours, and we do not sell either. Our quote is the private vehicle and driver that gets you to Bangcogon and waits. Book the day pass directly with the resort and tell us the boat you are booked on.

What the quote covers

Included
  • A private air-conditioned car or van with an English-speaking local driver for the Cebu mainland road leg to or from the port for Sumilon Island
  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at the exact addresses you give us, not a meeting point
  • Fuel, tolls and parking
  • Waiting time and any extra stops you tell us about up front, priced into the quote rather than added afterwards
  • One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel
Paid locally, not in our quote
  • Entrance, activity, guide and boat fees at places you choose to stop (paid locally)
  • Meals and personal spending
  • Accommodation, including a driver overnight on a multi-day trip unless we have set it out in the quote
  • Inter-island ferry and boat crossings, unless we have set them out in the quote

We never invent activity or entrance prices - you pay those directly on the ground.

Sumilon Island: frequently asked questions

How do I get to Sumilon Island?

Travel to Oslob on Cebu’s south-east coast - about 3-3.5 hours by private car from the city - then take a short banca from the Bancogon jetty across to Sumilon. Because it’s the same route as the whale sharks, most people combine the two.

Can I do Sumilon and the Oslob whale sharks in one day?

Yes, but on the island’s timetable rather than yours. An early whale-shark slot at Tan-awan finishes in time for the 10:00 AM boat from Bangcogon; the 8:00 AM boat does not combine. Whether Tumalog Falls also fits depends on which return boat you take - the 1:00 PM leaves the afternoon free, the 3:00 PM does not. The day-use pass has to be reserved with the resort in advance, so tell us the boat you are booked on and we time the drive to it.

Does a quote to Sumilon Island include the boat or ferry?

Getting to Sumilon Island means a road leg plus a sea crossing, and those are two different bookings. What we quote is the private vehicle leg on the Cebu side, timed to the sailing you are aiming for: one fixed all-in price agreed in writing before you travel, with fuel, tolls, parking and any waiting time or extra stops you tell us about already inside it. The crossing itself is not in that figure unless we have set it out for you. Tell us your sailing, or ask us to work to one, and we will say plainly what we are quoting for and what you book yourself - we will not leave you guessing at the pier.
