How do I get to Bantayan Island from Cebu City?
Short answer
Getting to Bantayan is a two-part journey: drive or bus about 3-4 hours north to Hagnaya port in San Remigio (~125 km), then cross by ferry to Santa Fe on the island, which takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half. The ferry timing is the part that catches people out.
The last ferries leave Hagnaya in the late afternoon or early evening, and since March 2026 sailings are also paused around high tide, so you generally need to leave Cebu City by about 1:00 PM to be safe. A private transfer timed to a specific departure - with buffer for traffic - makes the connection far less stressful than guessing with the bus.
Step by step: Cebu City to Bantayan Island
- 1Travel north to Hagnaya port
About 3-4 hours and ~125 km from the city. Ceres buses leave from the Cebu North Bus Terminal; a private car is door-to-door.
- 2Catch the Santa Fe ferry
RORO ferries (e.g. Island Shipping, Super Shuttle) cross from Hagnaya to Santa Fe in about 1-1.5 hours.
- 3Mind the tide, not just the clock
Since March 2026 the port authority and the shipping lines suspend Hagnaya sailings around high tide, so the last usable departure moves day to day. We confirm the day’s boat before we set out and aim to leave Cebu City by about 1:00 PM.
- 4Arrive on Bantayan
From Santa Fe port it’s a short tricycle ride to most beach accommodation.

Ways to travel, compared
- Private transfer to Hagnaya (what we arrange)~3-4 hrs to port
Door-to-door to Hagnaya, timed to a specific ferry with traffic buffer; island-side transport on request. Fixed price - request a quote.
- Ceres bus to Hagnaya~3.5-4.5 hrs
From the Cebu North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya port; cheapest, but you’re working to the bus’s schedule.
- Hagnaya → Santa Fe ferry~1-1.5 hrs
Frequent RORO crossings; last trip in the evening. Tickets usually bought at the port.
When Hagnaya port is open, and what to expect at the gate
- The crossing
- Hagnaya (San Remigio) to Santa Fe on Bantayan, roughly 1-1.5 hours by RORO. There is no direct boat from Cebu City - the drive north to the port is the first half of the journey
- High tide
- The Cebu Port Authority said in March 2026 that it had agreed with the shipping lines to suspend Hagnaya operations during high tide, so departures move with the tide cycle rather than running to a fixed board
- Why
- The magnitude 6.9 earthquake of 30 September 2025 tilted the berth and dropped it far enough that seawater washes over the loading area at high water. The port stays in use between tides; it is the loading area, not the route, that is affected
- Repair status
- Still open at the last reporting we can find (June 2026): geohazard studies were being contracted and the funding for a permanent fix was in dispute between the port authority and the host towns
- Second port
- Kawit port in Medellin, further north, also runs to Santa Fe and is used as the alternative when Hagnaya is awkward. It was damaged in the same earthquake
- Operators
- Island Shipping and Super Shuttle Ferry run the Hagnaya crossing; Aznar Shipping is named on the Kawit sailings. Tickets are bought at the port, in cash
- This is the single thing to settle before the car leaves Cebu City: on this route the boat, not the drive, sets the departure time - and since March 2026 the boat moves with the tide. We confirm the day’s sailings with the shipping line before we set out and time the pickup to a named departure, which on a 3-4 hour drive is the difference between a beach afternoon and a night in San Remigio.
- Published last departures from Hagnaya disagree - about 4:30 PM and about 5:30 PM both appear in current guides - so we are not printing a time we cannot stand behind. The practical advice every source agrees on is the same: leave Cebu City by about 1:00 PM, and earlier in the wet season.
- The tide constraint applies coming back as well. If you are on a flight out of Cebu the day you leave the island, build the buffer on the Bantayan side rather than the Cebu side - a missed morning boat is recoverable, a missed check-in is not.
- None of this closes Bantayan. Santa Fe has been open for business throughout, ferry operations through both Hagnaya and Kawit were reported normal within weeks of the quake, and the island itself is unaffected - the friction is at the mainland pier, and it is a timing problem rather than a safety one.
Add stops on the way to the pier
What we run on this route is the road leg to the pier, so the stops go on this side of the water: lunch, a viewpoint, a shop before you sail, with your bags staying in the car. The crossing itself is your own booking. Tell us the sailing you are aiming for and we work the pickup and the stops backwards from check-in.
- The car waits wherever you stop
- Luggage stays in the vehicle
- Fuel, tolls and parking included
- Entrance fees paid locally, as you go
We'll pre-fill Cebu City → Bantayan Island. Put the stops you want in the notes box and we'll come back with one all-in price.
What the quote covers
- A private air-conditioned car or van with an English-speaking local driver for the whole journey
- Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at the exact addresses you give us, not a meeting point
- Fuel, tolls and parking
- Waiting time and any extra stops you tell us about up front, priced into the quote rather than added afterwards
- One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel
- Entrance, activity, guide and boat fees at places you choose to stop (paid locally)
- Meals and personal spending
- Accommodation, including a driver overnight on a multi-day trip unless we have set it out in the quote
- Inter-island ferry and boat crossings, unless we have set them out in the quote
We never invent activity or entrance prices - you pay those directly on the ground.
Cebu City to Bantayan Island: FAQs
How far is Cebu City to Bantayan Island, and how long does it take?
It is about 125 km from Cebu City north to Hagnaya port in San Remigio - 3-4 hours by road - and then a ferry of roughly an hour to an hour and a half across to Santa Fe on Bantayan. Allow most of a day door to door once port time is counted. A private transfer timed to a specific ferry makes the land-and-sea connection much smoother than doing the two halves separately.
What time is the last ferry to Bantayan?
Later than most people need, but it is not a fixed board any more. Published last departures disagree - about 4:30 PM and about 5:30 PM both appear - and since March 2026 the Cebu Port Authority and the shipping lines suspend Hagnaya operations around high tide, so the day’s sailings shift with the tide cycle. Leave Cebu City by about 1:00 PM, and let us confirm the actual departure with the line before the car sets out.
Is Hagnaya port still damaged from the earthquake?
It is in use, but not fully repaired. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake of 30 September 2025 tilted and lowered the berth so that seawater rises over the loading area at high tide, and in March 2026 the Cebu Port Authority said it had agreed with the shipping lines to suspend operations during high tide. Reporting in June 2026 had the permanent repair still unfunded. The island and the crossing itself are fine - it is the mainland pier that constrains the timing.
Is there another port to Bantayan if Hagnaya is a problem?
Yes. Kawit port in Medellin, further up the north coast, also sails to Santa Fe and is the usual alternative, with Aznar Shipping named on those crossings. It was damaged in the same earthquake. Tell us your travel date and we will plan the drive to whichever port has a sailing that works.
Can Bantayan be done as a day trip?
It’s possible but very tight given the drive plus ferry each way. We usually recommend at least one overnight so the trip is actually relaxing.
Can you do the return trip, Bantayan Island back to Cebu City?
Yes - we meet your ferry at the pier and drive you back to Cebu City, the same road leg in reverse. The crossing stays your own booking, as on the way out. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price them together.
What does the price for Cebu City to Bantayan Island include?
The quote is one fixed all-in price for the private vehicle leg, agreed in writing before you travel, and fuel, tolls and parking are inside it - along with any waiting time or extra stops you tell us about when you ask. Because this trip involves a sea crossing, the ferry or boat ticket is not in that figure unless we have set it out for you: tell us your crossing and we will say plainly what we are quoting for and what you book yourself. Entrance and activity fees at anywhere you stop, and your meals, are paid locally.
