Carcar heritage & lechon
Carcar is a heritage town about 40 km south of Cebu City, beloved for its Spanish-era plaza and ancestral houses, its rotunda, and - above all - its food: Carcar lechon (roast pig) and chicharon are some of the most famous in the province. It’s a short, easy drive and a natural stop on the way to or from the deeper south.
Because the southern highway runs right through it, Carcar pairs perfectly with Simala Shrine, Oslob or Moalboal - a relaxed cultural-and-food break that breaks up a longer day. By private car it’s roughly 1-1.5 hours each way.

- Time the drive to the lechon, not to the distance. From Cebu City this is ~40 km but 1-1.5 hours in real traffic, so leaving the city around 8:00-9:00 AM puts you in the market inside the best window; arrive late afternoon and the stalls that are left are the ones nobody else wanted.
- The market’s closing time is reported differently by different sources - 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM both appear - so we are not printing one we cannot stand behind. It does not change the plan either way: the lechon is a morning and early-afternoon trade, whatever time the building shuts.
- You buy lechon by weight and eat it there. The rebuilt market has an upstairs dining area, with rice, puso and drinks from the surrounding stalls.
- The two things people carry home are ampao, a puffed-rice candy, and Carcar chicharon, cut thicker than the usual Visayan kind. Both are market stalls, both cash.
- Guides to the town warn that southbound and city-bound buses fill from late afternoon, with the 4:00-6:00 PM window the worst for a seat. It is the main reason a waiting car pays off here: you leave when you have finished eating rather than when there is room on a bus.
- Saint Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church anchors the plaza and is working parish, not a museum - services run through the day, and a mass in progress is a good moment to walk the ancestral houses instead.
