How do I get from Moalboal to Oslob?
Short answer
Moalboal and Oslob sit on opposite coasts of Cebu’s southern tip, so the trip runs south down the west coast to Bato, rounds the bottom of the island and comes back up the east side to Oslob. It’s about 65-70 km and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by private car door-to-door. It does not go anywhere near Cebu City, which is the assumption that makes people budget a whole day for it.
This is the direction where the clock matters, and it matters less than most people think. Whale-shark watching at Barangay Tan-awan, a few kilometres south of Oslob town, opens at 6:00 AM and takes its last registrations at 11:00 AM; the watching itself ends at noon. Reach the desk after 11 and there is no interaction that day, however far you have driven. That cut-off, not the 6:00 AM opening, is the figure a Moalboal start should be planned against.
Do the arithmetic with our own 2 to 2.5 hour road leg and Moalboal turns out to be the most forgiving approach on the island. A pickup at your Panagsama or White Beach hotel at around 4 am puts you at Tan-awan soon after it opens, which is the best of it: calmest water, shortest queue, softest light. But leaving at 8:00 AM still reaches the desk at about 10:00 to 10:30, inside the cut-off even on the slow end, and 8:30 is the last departure that still works if the road runs slow. Breakfast in Moalboal does not cost you the whale sharks - the early start buys you the quiet water and the slack, not the trip itself. From Cebu City the same decision is a 7:00 AM departure against a 3 to 3.5 hour drive, and from Mactan it is 6:00 to 6:30; Moalboal is two hours closer than either, which is the whole advantage of already being south.
By public transport there is no single direct bus. You flag a southbound “Bato via Barili” Ceres bus at the Moalboal junction, change at Bato to a “Bato via Oslob” service up the east coast, and it drops you on the highway rather than at the interaction beach. With the change and the waits that is 3-4 hours, and the first services do not line up with a pre-dawn start at all - which is why almost everyone doing the whale sharks out of Moalboal books a private transfer instead.
Step by step: Moalboal to Oslob

Pick your arrival time first and work backwards from the 11:00 AM registration cut-off, not from the 6:00 AM opening. The coastal road runs south out of Moalboal through Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, Ginatilan and Samboan to Bato at the island’s tip. Kawasan Falls in Badian is about the first twenty minutes of this leg.

From Bato the road turns through Santander and runs north-east along the coast towards Oslob. A private car carries straight through; by bus this is where you change.

A private driver drops you at the whale-shark area in Tan-awan, at your Oslob hotel, or at Oslob Port (Quartel Beach) if you are catching a boat, and waits while you swim. Tumalog Falls and Sumilon are both close enough to add on.

When the Oslob to Panglao crossing is open, and what to expect at the gate
- What actually runs
- One boat a day each way between Quartel Beach in Oslob and Momo Beach on Panglao, operated by Apekop Travel since 2017. It is a licensed 90 ft banca, not a fastcraft, and it carries passengers only - no vehicles

- Boarding 11:00 AM at Quartel Beach, behind the church in Poblacion; departure 11:30 AM; into Momo Beach about 1:00 PM. The operator puts the crossing itself at about 90 minutes
- Panglao to Oslob
- Boarding 5:00 AM at Momo Beach, departure 6:30 AM, into Oslob around 8:00 AM. That lands inside the whale-shark morning, which is why a lot of people take it
- It is a beach, not a port
- There is no pier at either end - a small transit boat runs you out to the banca off the sand. The operator says in as many words that you should not mind getting your feet wet, and that this is an adventure trip rather than a ferry service
- Who the operator says it does not suit
- Apekop asks passengers to be in good physical condition and states that the trip may not be suitable for parents with young children, elderly or pregnant passengers, or people with disabilities. We repeat that rather than soften it - if it rules your group out, the Cebu City Pier 1 fastcraft does not
- What people pay
- The operator publishes P1,000 one way and P1,200 for a day return bought at the departure beach, with P800 for Filipino, senior and student passengers, P500 for children 4-10 and free under 4, plus a P20 landing fee at Momo Beach and P100-150 for a bag over 10 kg. Public fares paid at the boat - not part of our quote, and worth confirming on the day
- The 11:30 AM is the plan, not a detail of it. Counted back with our own road times, leaving Moalboal means about 8:00-8:30 AM (2-2.5 hours) and leaving an Oslob hotel is a late breakfast - but Cebu City is 3-3.5 hours and Mactan airport 3.5-4, so from either of those this is a pre-dawn departure to catch a boat that Pier 1 would beat anyway. Miss it and there is no second sailing and no evening boat: the next one is tomorrow morning.
- Where it genuinely wins is Panglao. Momo Beach is already on Panglao, a short hop from Alona, so the crossing delivers you to the island itself - roughly five hours from Moalboal door to Panglao sand. The Pier 1 route is 6-7 hours door to Tagbilaran port and still needs a Bohol-side transfer on top. For Tagbilaran itself, the Chocolate Hills, or anywhere north or east on Bohol, Pier 1 is still the better crossing and we have not changed those pages.
- It is an open-water banca on a single daily sailing, and the operator reserves the right to cancel in bad weather or rough seas. Do not hang a same-day onward flight on it, and in the habagat months have the Pier 1 fallback in mind before you commit. Ask for the Oslob leg as a Multi-day or Point-to-point quote and we time the road run to the 11:00 AM boarding; the boat ticket you buy yourself.

How long does it take to get from Moalboal to Oslob?
About 2 to 2.5 hours by private car for the ~65-70 km via Bato, or 3-4 hours by public bus because you change buses at Bato. The winding coastal road, not the distance, is what sets the time.
What time should I leave Moalboal for the Oslob whale sharks?
Earlier is better, but later still works, and the two answers are different. Watching opens at 6:00 AM and registration closes at 11:00 AM. With our 2 to 2.5 hour drive, a 4 am pickup has you at Tan-awan soon after opening - calmest water, shortest queue, softest light underwater. If that is too brutal, an 8:00 AM departure still reaches the desk around 10:00 to 10:30, inside the cut-off even on the slow end, and about 8:30 is the latest that still holds if the road is slow. Is there a direct bus from Moalboal to Oslob?
No. There is no single direct bus. You take a “Bato via Barili” Ceres bus south from the Moalboal junction to Bato, then change to a “Bato via Oslob” bus up the east coast, and it sets you down on the highway rather than at the whale-shark area in Tan-awan. A private transfer skips the change and goes door-to-door.
Can we go to Oslob and back to Moalboal in the same day?
Yes, and it is the usual way to do it if you are based in Moalboal. Roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way with the driver waiting through the interaction, back in Moalboal for the afternoon. Say “return the same day” in the quote request and we price the whole day rather than two separate legs.
Can we stop at Kawasan Falls on the way to Oslob?
Kawasan Falls in Badian is about twenty minutes south of Moalboal, so it sits on this road. On a whale-shark morning it works better on the way back, once the early start is out of the way. Tell us in the quote request and we allow the time for it.
Can you drop us at Oslob Port (Quartel Beach) for a boat?
Yes. Quartel Beach in Oslob town is a standard drop for us and it is a selectable pickup and drop point on the quote form. Give us the boat you are aiming for in the quote request and we set the pickup so you are there with a buffer rather than cutting it fine.
Can you do the return trip, Oslob back to Moalboal?
Yes - the same private car and driver, Oslob back to Moalboal over the same ~65-70 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together. If the way back ends somewhere other than where you started, say where in the Anything else? box on the quote form and we quote that leg instead of the reverse of this one.
What does the price for Moalboal to Oslob include?

Do you book the whale sharks or the canyoneering for us, or do we buy those on the day?
The drive, the driver and the waiting time are ours and they are in the quote. Whatever is sold at the far end is bought there: whale-shark watching is registered in person at the Oslob desk and cannot be booked ahead by us or by anyone, canyoneering is booked on the day with the licensed Alegria operators, and falls entrances and the Moalboal environmental fee are paid at the gate. The exception is Sumilon, where the day-use pass must be reserved with the resort before you travel. So the thing worth getting right in the quote is the arrival time rather than a reservation, and that is the part we plan. How much notice do you need - can I book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. A very early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
Nothing to ask for a quote. Once you are happy with the price it is two steps, not a choice between two: a booking fee paid online (card, bank transfer or GCash) confirms the trip and is what gets you your written confirmation, then the balance goes directly to your driver at the end of the journey. The fee is part of the all-in figure you agreed rather than an extra on top of it, and your quote states it before you pay. Free cancellation up to 72 hours before pickup refunds the fee in full.
