Short answer

From Mactan-Cebu International Airport it’s about 125 km to the Bancogon jetty area near Oslob, roughly 3.5-4 hours by private car, then a short banca ride across to Sumilon Island and its shifting white sandbar. Because the drive is the same road as the Oslob whale sharks, most visitors combine the two on one long day, timed for an early-morning whale-shark interaction straight after landing the evening before.

There’s no direct bus from the airport - by public transport you’d first cross into Cebu City, then take a southbound Ceres bus down the coast to Oslob, then arrange the short boat to the island locally. A private transfer that meets you at arrivals and drives straight there skips all of that.

Step by step: Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB) to Sumilon Island

  1. 1
    Meet your driver at arrivals

A private transfer meets you with a name board at Mactan-Cebu airport - no queueing or negotiating a fare.

  2. 2
Cross off Mactan and head south-east

The route crosses one of the Mactan bridges, skirts Cebu City and continues down the south-east coastal highway toward Oslob, about 125 km and 3.5-4 hours total.

  3. 3
    Boat across to Sumilon

The resort boat crosses from Bangcogon on a fixed schedule between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM for day visitors, about 15 minutes in calm weather. The Bluewater day-use pass is reserved in advance, not bought at the jetty.

  4. 4
    Combine with Oslob & Tumalog

With a waiting driver, the whale sharks and Tumalog Falls fit into the same day as the Sumilon sandbar.

No direct route from the airport - first reach the Cebu South Bus Terminal, then a southbound Ceres bus to Oslob, then arrange the short boat to the island locally.

When Sumilon Island is open, and what to expect at the gate

There is only one way across
Sumilon is privately run by Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort, and the boat from the mainland jetty at Bangcogon is the resort’s own. There is no public banca you can flag down at the jetty, so this is not a stop you can improvise on the day
You have to book before you travel
Day visitors need a day-use pass reserved in advance with the resort. Walk-ups are not the arrangement, boat space is capacity-limited, and on weekends and public holidays boarding is first come, first served even with a pass
Boats to the island
8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM from Bangcogon. The crossing is about 15 minutes in calm weather and nearer 30 in the rainy months
Boats back to the mainland
9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. The day-use pass covers transfers between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, so a day visitor should plan on the 3:00 PM as the last boat off the island
Be at the jetty early
At least 15 minutes before your boat, and the day-pass terms ask for an hour before the 8:00 AM first sailing. Bring photo ID - the resort checks it before you board
The Wednesday closure
The sandbar, which is the reason most people come, closes for cleaning under an LGU Oslob rehabilitation rule. Sources disagree on whether that is every Wednesday or only the third of the month, so treat any Wednesday as a risk and confirm the date when you reserve
Which boat pairs with the whale sharks
The 10:00 AM. Whale-shark watching at Tan-awan opens at 6:00 AM and is about 30 minutes on the water, so an early slot has you finished with time to reach Bangcogon for a 10:00 AM boat. The 8:00 AM boat does not combine - you would need to be at the jetty before the interaction is over
  • What the choice of return boat actually costs you. Off the 10:00 AM crossing, the 1:00 PM boat back leaves the afternoon free for Tumalog Falls and a stop or two on the drive north; the 3:00 PM boat gives you the full island day but the rest of the south is gone. That is the real trade behind "can I fit both Sumilon and Tumalog", and it is a choice about the return boat, not about the drive.
  • If your whale-shark slot runs late, the 12:00 noon boat still works - registration at Tan-awan closes at 11:00 AM - but then the 3:00 PM return is only about three hours on the island. Tell us which boat you want to make and we time the pickup back from it.
  • The pass and the boat are the resort’s, not ours, and we do not sell either. Our quote is the private vehicle and driver that gets you to Bangcogon and waits. Book the day pass directly with the resort and tell us the boat you are booked on.

Add stops on the way to the pier

What we run on this route is the road leg to the pier, so the stops go on this side of the water: lunch, a viewpoint, a shop before you sail, with your bags staying in the car. The crossing itself is your own booking. Send us your flight and the sailing you are aiming for, and we set the pickup and the stops so the two connect with room to spare.

  • The car waits wherever you stop
  • Luggage stays in the vehicle
  • Fuel, tolls and parking included
  • Entrance fees paid locally, as you go

We'll pre-fill Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB) Sumilon Island (Oslob). Put the stops you want in the notes box and we'll come back with one all-in price.

What the quote covers

Included
  • A private air-conditioned car or van with an English-speaking local driver for the whole journey
  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at the exact addresses you give us, not a meeting point
  • Fuel, tolls and parking
  • Waiting time and any extra stops you tell us about up front, priced into the quote rather than added afterwards
  • One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel
Paid locally, not in our quote
  • Entrance, activity, guide and boat fees at places you choose to stop (paid locally)
  • Meals and personal spending
  • Accommodation, including a driver overnight on a multi-day trip unless we have set it out in the quote
  • Inter-island ferry and boat crossings, unless we have set them out in the quote

We never invent activity or entrance prices - you pay those directly on the ground.

Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB) to Sumilon Island: FAQs

Can I do the Oslob whale sharks and Sumilon Island on the same day?

Yes, on the 10:00 AM boat, and it is worth knowing why before you plan the rest of the day. Whale-shark watching at Tan-awan opens at 6:00 AM and is about 30 minutes on the water, so an early slot leaves time to reach the Bangcogon jetty for the 10:00 AM crossing; the 8:00 AM boat does not work, because you would have to be at the jetty before the interaction is over. Sumilon is not a stop you can improvise, though - the island is privately run by Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort, the boat is the resort’s own, and a day-use pass has to be reserved in advance. Coming back, boats leave the island at 9:00 and 11:00 AM, 1:00, 3:00 and 4:30 PM, and the day-use pass covers transfers only between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. That return time is the real decision: take the 1:00 PM and Tumalog Falls and a stop or two on the drive north still fit, take the 3:00 PM and Sumilon is your whole afternoon. One more thing to check before you fix a date - the sandbar closes for cleaning under an LGU Oslob rule, and sources disagree over whether that is every Wednesday or only the third of the month, so avoid a Wednesday unless the resort confirms it is open.

Is there a direct transfer from Mactan airport to Sumilon Island?

There’s no direct public bus, but a private transfer goes straight from the airport to the Bancogon jetty near Oslob in about 3.5-4 hours, then a short boat reaches the island - easily combined with the whale sharks.

Can I do the whale sharks and Sumilon the same day I land?

Only really if you land the evening before and stay nearby - the whale-shark interaction runs at first light. Send your flight details with your quote request and we’ll help time it.

How long is the airport-to-Sumilon drive?

Roughly 3.5-4 hours for the 125 km down to the Bancogon jetty area, then a short banca crossing to the island.

Can you do the return trip, Sumilon Island back to Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB)?

Yes - for the way back we meet your ferry at the pier and drive you on to Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB), the same road leg in reverse. You book the crossing itself, as on the way out; tell us your ferry and your flight time in the quote request and we set the pickup so the two connect with room to spare.

What does the price for Mactan-Cebu Airport (CEB) to Sumilon Island include?

The quote is one fixed all-in price for the private vehicle leg, agreed in writing before you travel, and fuel, tolls and parking are inside it - along with any waiting time or extra stops you tell us about when you ask. Because this trip involves a sea crossing, the ferry or boat ticket is not in that figure unless we have set it out for you: tell us your crossing and we will say plainly what we are quoting for and what you book yourself. Entrance and activity fees at anywhere you stop, and your meals, are paid locally.
