How do I get to Sumilon Island from Cebu City?
Short answer
Sumilon Island lies just off Oslob on Cebu’s south-east coast, so getting there is essentially the same journey as the Oslob whale sharks: about 3-3.5 hours by private car to the Oslob area (~120 km), then a short banca ride from the Bancogon jetty across to the island and its famous shifting sandbar.
Because the route is identical, Sumilon is almost always combined with the whale sharks and Tumalog Falls in a single day. A private car with a waiting driver makes that day-trip trio realistic from the city.
Step by step: Cebu City to Sumilon Island
- 1Leave the city early
An early private departure lets you fit Sumilon together with the Oslob whale sharks and Tumalog Falls.
- 2Travel south-east to Oslob
About 3-3.5 hours and ~120 km down the south-east coastal highway to the Bancogon jetty area.
- 3Take the boat to Sumilon
The resort boat crosses from Bangcogon at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, about 15 minutes in calm weather. Reserve a Bluewater day-use pass before you travel and bring photo ID - the resort checks it before boarding.
- 4Combine with Oslob & Tumalog
With a waiting driver, do the whale sharks, Tumalog Falls and the Sumilon sandbar in one day.

Ways to travel, compared
- Private transfer (what we arrange)~3-3.5 hrs
Private car to the Bancogon/Oslob area, timed for an early start and combined with the whale sharks. Fixed price - request a quote.
- Bancogon → Sumilon boat~short hop
The resort’s scheduled boat, not a public banca. Boats out at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM; back at 9:00 and 11:00 AM, 1:00, 3:00 and 4:30 PM. Day-use pass reserved in advance, transfers covered 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
When Sumilon Island is open, and what to expect at the gate
- There is only one way across
- Sumilon is privately run by Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort, and the boat from the mainland jetty at Bangcogon is the resort’s own. There is no public banca you can flag down at the jetty, so this is not a stop you can improvise on the day
- You have to book before you travel
- Day visitors need a day-use pass reserved in advance with the resort. Walk-ups are not the arrangement, boat space is capacity-limited, and on weekends and public holidays boarding is first come, first served even with a pass
- Boats to the island
- 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM from Bangcogon. The crossing is about 15 minutes in calm weather and nearer 30 in the rainy months
- Boats back to the mainland
- 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. The day-use pass covers transfers between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, so a day visitor should plan on the 3:00 PM as the last boat off the island
- Be at the jetty early
- At least 15 minutes before your boat, and the day-pass terms ask for an hour before the 8:00 AM first sailing. Bring photo ID - the resort checks it before you board
- The Wednesday closure
- The sandbar, which is the reason most people come, closes for cleaning under an LGU Oslob rehabilitation rule. Sources disagree on whether that is every Wednesday or only the third of the month, so treat any Wednesday as a risk and confirm the date when you reserve
- Which boat pairs with the whale sharks
- The 10:00 AM. Whale-shark watching at Tan-awan opens at 6:00 AM and is about 30 minutes on the water, so an early slot has you finished with time to reach Bangcogon for a 10:00 AM boat. The 8:00 AM boat does not combine - you would need to be at the jetty before the interaction is over
- What the choice of return boat actually costs you. Off the 10:00 AM crossing, the 1:00 PM boat back leaves the afternoon free for Tumalog Falls and a stop or two on the drive north; the 3:00 PM boat gives you the full island day but the rest of the south is gone. That is the real trade behind "can I fit both Sumilon and Tumalog", and it is a choice about the return boat, not about the drive.
- If your whale-shark slot runs late, the 12:00 noon boat still works - registration at Tan-awan closes at 11:00 AM - but then the 3:00 PM return is only about three hours on the island. Tell us which boat you want to make and we time the pickup back from it.
- The pass and the boat are the resort’s, not ours, and we do not sell either. Our quote is the private vehicle and driver that gets you to Bangcogon and waits. Book the day pass directly with the resort and tell us the boat you are booked on.
Add stops on the way to the pier
What we run on this route is the road leg to the pier, so the stops go on this side of the water: lunch, a viewpoint, a shop before you sail, with your bags staying in the car. The crossing itself is your own booking. Tell us the sailing you are aiming for and we work the pickup and the stops backwards from check-in.
- The car waits wherever you stop
- Luggage stays in the vehicle
- Fuel, tolls and parking included
- Entrance fees paid locally, as you go
We'll pre-fill Cebu City → Sumilon Island (Oslob). Put the stops you want in the notes box and we'll come back with one all-in price.
What the quote covers
- A private air-conditioned car or van with an English-speaking local driver for the whole journey
- Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at the exact addresses you give us, not a meeting point
- Fuel, tolls and parking
- Waiting time and any extra stops you tell us about up front, priced into the quote rather than added afterwards
- One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel
- Entrance, activity, guide and boat fees at places you choose to stop (paid locally)
- Meals and personal spending
- Accommodation, including a driver overnight on a multi-day trip unless we have set it out in the quote
- Inter-island ferry and boat crossings, unless we have set them out in the quote
We never invent activity or entrance prices - you pay those directly on the ground.
Cebu City to Sumilon Island: FAQs
How do I get to Sumilon Island from Cebu City?
Travel to Oslob - about 3-3.5 hours by private car - then take a short banca from the Bancogon jetty across to Sumilon. It’s the same route as the whale sharks, so the two are usually combined.
Can I do Sumilon and the whale sharks the same day?
Yes, on the 10:00 AM boat from Bangcogon - an early whale-shark slot at Tan-awan finishes in time for it, while the 8:00 AM boat does not. Whether Tumalog Falls also fits comes down to the return: the 1:00 PM boat leaves the afternoon free, the 3:00 PM is the last one your day-use pass covers and uses the rest of the day. Reserve the pass with the resort in advance, and avoid a Wednesday if the sandbar is the point.
Can you do the return trip, Sumilon Island back to Cebu City?
Yes - we meet your ferry at the pier and drive you back to Cebu City, the same road leg in reverse. The crossing stays your own booking, as on the way out. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price them together.
What does the price for Cebu City to Sumilon Island include?
The quote is one fixed all-in price for the private vehicle leg, agreed in writing before you travel, and fuel, tolls and parking are inside it - along with any waiting time or extra stops you tell us about when you ask. Because this trip involves a sea crossing, the ferry or boat ticket is not in that figure unless we have set it out for you: tell us your crossing and we will say plainly what we are quoting for and what you book yourself. Entrance and activity fees at anywhere you stop, and your meals, are paid locally.
