Sinulog 2027 in Cebu: dates, what happens, and getting around the parade
When is Sinulog 2027, and how do I get around Cebu City during the festival?
Short answer
Sinulog 2027 falls on Sunday 17 January 2027, the third Sunday of January, when the Grand Parade dances its way through Cebu City. The Sinulog Foundation and the Cebu City government have announced the opening salvo for Thursday 7 January 2027, with the Cebu City Sports Center again the main venue, and the rest of the calendar still being coordinated between the city and the organisers, so the religious and cultural dates between those two are not fixed yet. For a visitor the practical part is simple: the Grand Parade closes sections of the city-centre route for the day, city-centre hotels fill for the weekend, and the airport, the south-coast day trips and the ferries all run as normal.
Sinulog is the biggest festival in the Visayas and the single busiest weekend of the year in Cebu City. It honours the Santo Nino de Cebu, the image of the Child Jesus given to Cebu in 1521, and it has grown from a religious novena into a city-wide street parade and dance competition that draws visitors from across the Philippines and fills the city-centre hotels for days.
The date itself is the part people most often get wrong when planning. Sinulog is held on the third Sunday of January, which makes Sinulog 2027 Sunday 17 January 2027. What moves between editions is everything around it: the opening salvo, the processions and the closing rites are set and announced each year by the Sinulog Foundation together with the Cebu City government, not derived from a calendar rule, so a schedule copied from last year will be wrong by a day or two.
This page states what has actually been announced for 2027, explains the shape the festival takes so you can plan around it, and is honest about which dates are still open. If your trip lands on that weekend, the thing worth sorting early is ground transport: the parade closes roads in the city centre, and a driver booked in advance is the difference between a planned morning and a long wait.
Sinulog 2027: the dates that are confirmed
Two 2027 dates have been announced so far, and the venue. Everything else in the festival calendar is still being settled between the Sinulog Foundation Inc and the Cebu City government, who have said they are coordinating it specifically to avoid clashes between the religious and the cultural events.
Grand Parade - Sunday 17 January 2027
The main event, and the day most people mean by "Sinulog". Contingents dance the carousel route through the city centre from the Cebu City Sports Center. This is the third Sunday of January, which is the one genuinely consistent rule in the festival calendar.
Opening salvo - Thursday 7 January 2027
The festival opening, announced by the organisers for 7 January. Note that this one does not follow a rule: it was 9 January for both the 2025 and 2026 editions, so it is announced rather than derived, and it is worth re-checking nearer the time.
Main venue - Cebu City Sports Center
The CCSC remains the main venue for the 2027 festivities, as in recent editions. It is where the Grand Parade starts and finishes.
Still to be announced
The novena masses, the fluvial procession, the solemn foot procession, the Mananita mass and the closing rite had not been published for 2027 at the time of writing. We will not guess them here. Check the Sinulog Foundation and the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino for the official programme closer to the date.
What actually happens across the festival
Sinulog is not a single day. It runs as roughly a fortnight of religious observance with the street festival at the end of it, and knowing the shape helps even if the 2027 dates for each part are not out yet. Using the 2025 edition as the illustration, the sequence ran like this:
The pattern is stable even though the dates move. A nine-day novena at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino builds up to the festival weekend; a dawn walk and a Traslacion mass carry the image between Mandaue and Cebu City; a solemn foot procession fills the city streets on the Saturday; and the Sunday opens before dawn with the Mananita mass and a pontifical mass before the Grand Parade steps off mid-morning.
The novena
Nine days of masses at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino in the city centre, the religious heart of the festival and the reason the whole thing exists. Busy, and genuinely worth attending even if you are not Catholic.
Walk with Mary and the Traslacion
A pre-dawn walk and a mass marking the transfer of the image, held in the days before the parade weekend. In 2025 this fell on the Friday, at 4:00 AM, starting in Mandaue City.
Solemn foot procession
The Saturday before the parade. The venerated image of the Santo Nino is carried through the city on foot in a long, slow procession, and it closes city streets in its own right, a day earlier than most visitors expect.
Mananita mass and the Grand Parade
Parade Sunday starts very early: a 4:00 AM Mananita mass and a dawn pontifical mass at the Basilica, with the Grand Parade itself stepping off mid-morning from the Cebu City Sports Center. In 2025 the parade began at 9:00 AM.
Getting around Cebu City on parade weekend
This is the part that affects your trip rather than your itinerary, and it is the reason to read this page at all. The Grand Parade closes sections of the route through the city centre for the day, and the Saturday foot procession closes streets too. Both are in the oldest, densest part of the city, which is also where most of the city-centre hotels are.
What does not change: Mactan-Cebu International Airport operates normally, and so do the south-coast day trips, the island hops and the ferries. Sinulog is a Cebu City event, not an island-wide shutdown. The planning problem is specifically getting into, out of or across the city centre on the Saturday and the Sunday.
Airport transfers on 17 January
The airport runs as normal and the bridges off Mactan stay open, but a city-centre hotel drop-off may need a longer, re-routed approach around the closures. Allow extra time either side of the parade and tell us your hotel when you ask for a quote, so the driver plans the approach rather than discovering it.
Leaving the city centre on parade day
If you are heading south to Oslob, Moalboal or Kawasan on parade Sunday, start early. Getting clear of the city before the route closes is far easier than threading out through it mid-morning.
Hotels and the weekend
City-centre hotels fill for the Sinulog weekend and are usually the first thing to go. If you want to be walking distance from the parade, book that well ahead; if you would rather be quiet, the Mactan resort strip is a different world on the same night.
Book ground transport early
Private drivers and vehicles are in higher demand across the festival weekend, the same way they are at Christmas and New Year. Dates confirmed early get the pickup time and vehicle size you actually wanted.
If your trip is near Sinulog but not on it
Mid-December through the Sinulog weekend is the single busiest stretch on the Cebu calendar, because the festival sits on top of both the dry season and the Filipino Christmas homecoming. If your dates fall anywhere in that window, the advice is the same as for the festival itself: nothing is closed to you, it is all just busier, and lead time is what buys you your first choice.
The week after the parade is one of the better-value times to be in Cebu. The weather is still dry-season weather, the city has emptied out again, and the south coast and the islands are back to normal rhythm.
What the quote covers
- A private air-conditioned car or van with an English-speaking local driver for the whole journey
- Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at the exact addresses you give us, not a meeting point
- Fuel, tolls and parking
- Waiting time and any extra stops you tell us about up front, priced into the quote rather than added afterwards
- One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel
- Entrance, activity, guide and boat fees at places you choose to stop (paid locally)
- Meals and personal spending
- Accommodation, including a driver overnight on a multi-day trip unless we have set it out in the quote
- Inter-island ferry and boat crossings, unless we have set them out in the quote
We never invent activity or entrance prices - you pay those directly on the ground.
Frequently asked questions
When is Sinulog 2027?
Sunday 17 January 2027. Sinulog is held on the third Sunday of January, which is the one reliably consistent rule in the festival calendar, and the organisers have confirmed the Grand Parade for 17 January.
What time does the Sinulog Grand Parade start?
Mid-morning from the Cebu City Sports Center, with the religious programme starting long before dawn. The exact 2027 start time has not been published yet; in 2025 the Grand Parade began at 9:00 AM, after a 4:00 AM Mananita mass and a 6:00 AM pontifical mass.
Is the full Sinulog 2027 schedule out yet?
Not yet. The opening salvo (7 January), the Grand Parade (17 January) and the Cebu City Sports Center as main venue have been announced, but the Sinulog Foundation and the city government are still coordinating the rest of the calendar to avoid clashes between the religious and cultural events. We publish the dates that have been announced and do not guess the others, because the processions move between editions.
Does Sinulog close roads in Cebu City?
Yes, in the city centre. The Grand Parade closes sections of its route through the centre for the day, and the solemn foot procession on the Saturday closes streets as well. The airport, the bridges off Mactan, the south-coast day trips and the ferries all run as normal, so it is city-centre timing specifically that needs planning.
Can I still do a south Cebu day trip during Sinulog?
Yes. Oslob, Moalboal, Kawasan and the island trips all operate through the festival. The only adjustment worth making is an early start on parade Sunday, so you are out of the city centre before the route closes.
Is Sinulog ever cancelled or changed?
It has been. The street festival was called off in 2021 for the pandemic and curtailed in 2022 after Typhoon Rai, with the religious observance continuing both times. The date rule is consistent, but the programme is set each year by the organisers, so check for advisories close to your travel dates rather than assuming last year applies.
How far ahead should I book a driver for the Sinulog weekend?
As soon as your flights are confirmed. The festival weekend has the same demand profile as Christmas and New Year: the island is not full, but preferred pickup times and the larger vehicles go first, and city-centre pickups on parade weekend need a driver who has planned the route around the closures.
What does a private car and driver quote for this trip include?
One fixed all-in price for the trip, agreed in writing before you travel, with fuel, tolls and parking inside it - along with any waiting time or extra stops you tell us about when you ask. What stays separate is what you would choose anyway: entrance, activity and boat fees at the places you stop, your meals, and your accommodation. We do not invent activity prices, so those you pay directly on the ground.
