Cebu City — history, food & your island basecamp
Cebu City is where the story of the Philippines begins — Magellan planted a cross here in 1521, the Santo Niño has been venerated here longer than anywhere else in the country, and the oldest street and oldest fort in the Philippines both sit within a few blocks of each other. But the city is also the island's working heart: it is where the south bus terminal, the piers and the best lechon stalls all converge, and where your driver picks you up to start the real adventure.
For a traveller, Cebu City works two ways. It can be a destination in its own right — a full day of heritage, food and city views — or it can be the basecamp you sleep in and launch south, north or across the water from. Most of our guests do both: a day or two in the city, then the private car collects them from their hotel and the island opens up.
The airport is about 13-15 km across the Mactan Channel — a 30-60 minute drive depending on traffic. The city side is compact enough that the main heritage stops (Magellan's Cross, the Basilica, Fort San Pedro, Colon Street) are all walkable from each other, and the highlands (Temple of Leah, Sirao Garden, TOPS) are a short drive uphill for a completely different view.

The MyBus service runs between Mactan-Cebu Airport and SM City Cebu via the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge. Cheapest option, but fixed route and no door-to-door.

Magellan's Cross & the Basilica
The cross planted in 1521 sits inside a pavilion on Plaza Sugbo, directly beside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño — the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country.
Fort San Pedro & Colon Street
The oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines (1565) and the oldest street — both an easy walk from the cross and the basilica.
Cebu lechon & Carbon Market
The city's lechon is a claimed national treasure. Carbon Market, the oldest and largest farmers' market in the city, runs day and night and is a sensory Cebu experience.
The highlands overlook
Temple of Leah, Sirao Garden and TOPS sit on a ridge above the city — a cool, green half-day escape with views across the strait to Mactan.
Best time to visit
Year-round; the heritage walk is best in the morning before the midday heat, and the highlands overlook is at its most dramatic just before sunset. If you are visiting in January, the Sinulog Festival (third Sunday) transforms the entire city into the biggest street party in the Visayas.

Yes — that is exactly how most of our guests use it. Cebu City sits at the centre of the island's road network: the south-coast destinations (Moalboal, Oslob, Kawasan Falls, Simala Shrine) and the north-coast ferry ports (Hagnaya for Bantayan, Maya for Malapascua) all start from here. A private car and driver picks you up at your city hotel and you are back the same evening for most day-trip destinations.
