How do I get from the Mactan resorts to Moalboal?
Short answer
Moalboal is on the far south-west coast, roughly 105-115 km from the Mactan resort strip and about 3 to 3.5 hours by private car. The extra distance over the airport run is simply the length of Mactan island itself: you start deeper into Lapu-Lapu than an arriving passenger does, cross to the mainland and then pick up the same south coastal road through Carcar and Barili.
Which bridge you cross is worth understanding, because it is the part of this drive that changes with the hour. The Marcelo Fernan and Mactan-Mandaue bridges feed you into Mandaue and the city, which is the bottleneck; the CCLEX expressway drops you onto the South Road Properties and past most of it, which is why a southbound run out of Cordova or Punta Engano often takes it. Your driver picks on the day for what the traffic is actually doing.
Most guests on this corridor are not moving hotels at all - they are going for the sardine run and the turtles and coming back the same night, which is a long day and exactly why the car and driver stay with you. If you are staying over in Moalboal instead, say so and we quote the one-way. Either way the sardines are a free shore snorkel off Panagsama, so there is nothing to book ahead but the vehicle.
Step by step: Mactan resorts (Lapu-Lapu) to Moalboal
- 1Leave the resort early
The sardine run shows best in mid-morning light and the drive is over three hours, so a 5am or 6am collection from the lobby is the normal shape of this day. Your driver comes to reception.
- 2Off Mactan by the quickest crossing
The CCLEX expressway to the South Road Properties, or the Marcelo Fernan or Mactan-Mandaue bridge, whichever is moving. This is the only genuinely slow part of the journey.
- 3South through Carcar and Barili
The coastal road south, then west across the island. Roughly 105-115 km and 3 to 3.5 hours in total, and Carcar is where most people stop for lechon on the way back rather than on the way out.
- 4Panagsama, and the car waits
Dropped at Panagsama Beach or your dive shop. The driver waits while you are in the water, so a Pescador Island boat or a second swim does not have to be decided in advance.

Ways to travel, compared
- Private car and driver (what we arrange)~3-3.5 hrs each way
Door-to-door from your resort lobby, driver waits through the day, stops where you want them, back to Mactan the same evening or one-way if you are staying over. Fixed all-in price covering fuel, tolls and parking - request a quote.
- Ceres bus, via the city~4.5-5.5 hrs all in
There is no bus from the resort strip. You would first get yourself into Cebu City to the South Bus Terminal on Natalio Bacalso Avenue, then take a Ceres Liner marked "Bato via Barili" - not "Bato via Oslob", which goes the long way round the island. Much cheaper, and it puts a transfer with your bags at the front of the day.
- Shared V-hire van~4-5 hrs all in
Fewer stops than the bus but the same problem at the start: the vans leave from the city, not from Mactan, and fixed seats with a luggage limit suit a day-tripper with a dry bag rather than a family.
Add stops on the way to Moalboal
It is a ~105-115 km drive, and you do not have to do it in one go. The car is yours for the journey and the driver waits wherever you stop, so a waterfall, an old church or a long lunch can sit in the middle of the run rather than costing you a separate day. List the stops you want in the quote request and we price the day, not the hop.
- The car waits at every stop
- Luggage stays in the vehicle
- Fuel, tolls and parking included
- Entrance fees paid locally, as you go

Mactan resorts (Lapu-Lapu) to Moalboal: FAQs
How far is Moalboal from the Mactan resorts?
Roughly 105-115 km, and about 3 to 3.5 hours by private car. It is a little further than the same trip from the airport because the resort strip sits deeper into Mactan island, and the first few kilometres are the slowest of the journey.
Can we do the sardine run as a day trip and sleep back at the resort?
Yes, and most guests do. It is a long day - an early start, three hours each way and several hours in the water - which is why the driver stays with you rather than dropping you and leaving. You are usually back at the resort for a late dinner.
Do we need to book the sardine run in advance?
No. The sardines and the turtles are a free shore snorkel straight off Panagsama Beach - no boat needed. Gear rental and an optional Pescador Island boat are arranged locally and paid there; they are never part of our quote unless your written quote says otherwise.
Which bridge do you take off Mactan?
Whichever is moving on the day. The CCLEX expressway lands on the South Road Properties and skips most of the Mandaue and city traffic, which usually makes it the better southbound choice; the Marcelo Fernan and Mactan-Mandaue bridges are the alternatives. Tolls are included in the quote.
Can you do the return trip, Moalboal back to Mactan resorts (Lapu-Lapu)?
Yes - the same private car and driver, Moalboal back to Mactan resorts (Lapu-Lapu) over the same ~105-115 km. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price the round trip together.
