Bantayan Island: how to get there from Cebu, and what to do

Where Bantayan is, and how you actually get there

Bantayan Island sits off the north-west corner of Cebu. The gateway is Hagnaya port, in the town of San Remigio near the northern tip of the Cebu mainland, and the island port you land at is Santa Fe, the main tourist town where the best beaches and most resorts are.

The two mainland starts are not the same length. From Cebu City it is about 125 km and 3 to 4 hours north to Hagnaya; from Mactan-Cebu Airport it is about 140 km and 4 to 4.5 hours, because the run begins with a bridge off Mactan before it bypasses the city. Then you cross by ferry to Santa Fe, about an hour to an hour and a half on the water. So door to beach is comfortably half a day once port time is counted, and the travel is the first half of day one rather than a morning.

You can do the whole thing by public transport: a Ceres bus from the Cebu North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya, then a walk-on ferry ticket at the port, and a tricycle from Santa Fe to your resort. It is inexpensive and perfectly doable. The catch is the timing, and "in good time" is not an answer, so here is the one we use: be away from Cebu City by about 1:00 PM, or off a flight and moving by about noon, and the boat is a question of which sailing rather than whether there is one. Miss that and the cost is not a couple of hours at the port, it is a night in San Remigio, because there is no later crossing to fall back on. That is what a private car and driver is buying on this route - a pickup timed to a departure we have confirmed with the line, not an early start and a hope.

The Hagnaya to Santa Fe ferry

The crossing between Hagnaya on the Cebu mainland and Santa Fe on Bantayan is a short one, roughly an hour to an hour and a half, run by roll-on-roll-off car ferries and passenger boats through the day - Island Shipping and Super Shuttle Ferry on this crossing, tickets bought at the port in cash. Sailings run from early morning until early evening rather than once or twice a day, so on the way over the frequency is on your side.

What is not on your side is the board itself, and this is the honest reason we will not print you a last-boat time. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake of 30 September 2025 tilted the Hagnaya berth and dropped it far enough that seawater washes over the loading area at high water, and in March 2026 the Cebu Port Authority said it had agreed with the shipping lines to suspend operations there during high tide. So the day’s sailings move with the tide cycle rather than running to a fixed schedule, and published last departures already disagree with each other - about 4:30 PM and about 5:30 PM both appear in current guides. Reporting in June 2026 had the permanent repair still unfunded. None of this touches the island or the crossing: Santa Fe has been open throughout and the boats run normally between tides. It is the mainland pier that constrains the timing, which is exactly why the 1:00 PM departure from the city matters more here than the drive time does.

There is a second port if the day’s tide makes Hagnaya awkward. Kawit port in Medellin, further up the north coast, also sails to Santa Fe, with Aznar Shipping named on those crossings; it was damaged in the same earthquake. A few honest practicalities. On the busiest travel dates (Holy Week above all, and long weekends) the ferries and their vehicle slots fill up, and queues at Hagnaya build, so an early start matters far more than usual. You do not need to bring a car across for a beach stay, because tricycles, motorbikes and bikes cover the island easily, so most visitors park the private-driver question at "get me to Hagnaya for a sailing" rather than shipping a vehicle over. And crossings can be suspended in genuinely rough weather, which is worth knowing if you are travelling at the tail of the rainy season.

What to do on Bantayan

Bantayan is a beach-and-slow-days island rather than a checklist of big attractions, and that is the appeal. The headline is simply the sand and water around Santa Fe, but there is enough to fill two or three unhurried days.

• The beaches

  Long stretches of fine white sand and calm, shallow, swimmable water around Santa Fe (Sugar Beach and the Kota Beach area are the best known), ideal for wading, sunset walks and doing very little.

• Island hopping

  Bangka (outrigger) boat trips out to the smaller sandbars and islets off Bantayan (Virgin Island and the nearby cays) for snorkelling and swimming, arranged locally with the boatmen and resorts.

• Ogtong Cave and pools

  A natural freshwater cave pool set in resort grounds near Santa Fe, a cool swim away from the beach and an easy add for families.

• Cycle or scooter the island

  Bantayan is famously flat, so renting a bicycle or a motorbike to loop the coast, ride out to Bantayan town and Madridejos, and find quieter beaches is one of the nicest ways to spend a day.

• Heritage corners

  The old Sts Peter and Paul parish church in Bantayan town is one of the oldest in the province and worth the ride, and there are the remains of a Spanish-era coral-stone watch fort at Kota Park in Madridejos on the north of the island.

• Seafood and sunsets

  The island is known for fresh, cheap seafood and, historically, for poultry, so eating well is easy, and the west-facing beaches deliver the sunset that ends most Bantayan days.

The best time to visit (and why Holy Week is special)

The comfortable, reliably dry window is roughly the dry season from around December to May, with the clearest beach weather generally in the first months of the year before the heat of the pre-monsoon peaks. The wetter, less predictable stretch runs through the second half of the year, and while Bantayan is not on the most typhoon-battered side of the Philippines, rough weather at the tail of the rainy season can still disrupt the ferry, so build in a little slack if you travel then. Bantayan has one genuinely unusual claim: it holds a long-standing Catholic dispensation from the Holy Week abstinence from meat, so during Semana Santa (the Easter holy week, in March or April) the island becomes one of the most popular getaways in the Visayas, packed with domestic visitors and famous for its food. It is a wonderful time to see the island at full tilt, but it is comfortably the single busiest period of the year: resorts, ferries and vehicle slots book out well in advance and prices rise, so plan far ahead or deliberately avoid it if you want the quiet version.

How many days, and getting around the island

Because the travel each way eats the best part of a day, Bantayan rewards an overnight stay rather than a day trip. Two or three nights is the sweet spot: a half-day to travel in, a full day for the beach and an island-hopping boat, a day to cycle the island and see the town and Kota Park, and a relaxed morning before the ferry back. Trying to see it as a single day out from Cebu City is not worth it, since you would spend almost the whole day in transit.

On the island itself you do not need much. Tricycles handle the short hops between Santa Fe, the resorts and Bantayan town for a fixed local fare, and renting a bicycle or a motorbike is the classic way to explore the flat coast at your own pace. Most people base themselves in or around Santa Fe for the beaches and the ferry, and only venture to the town and the north for a half-day.

Getting to Bantayan without the stress

The whole trick with Bantayan is the front half of the journey: the long drive up the coast and catching a ferry without a wasted wait. Get that right and the island itself takes care of you.

The public-transport route (north-terminal Ceres bus to Hagnaya, then a walk-on ferry) is cheap and reliable if you have the time and do not mind the connections. For a smoother start, especially if you are arriving on a flight, travelling as a family or a group, or going over a busy weekend, a private car and driver from the airport or your city hotel straight to Hagnaya takes the timing risk out of it: one comfortable run to the port, help with the ferry, and a pickup arranged for the day you come back. The harder half is the day you leave, because then the deadline is a plane rather than a beach, and it is worth knowing the number before you book the flight. Counting back from departures: about 3 hours inside the terminal for a domestic flight or 4 for an international one, then the road from Hagnaya planned at about 5 hours rather than the 4 to 4.5 of open highway, because the city-side approach and the bridge onto Mactan are the slow part. That is 8 and 9 hours from the car at Hagnaya. Put the crossing and the port handling in front of it and the sailing you need leaves Santa Fe about 8.5 hours before a domestic flight and about 9.5 before an international one, so the hotel door is about 9 and 10. A 6:00 PM domestic departure means being on the water by about 9:30 AM; an 8:00 PM international, about 10:30 AM.

Run that backwards far enough and it settles the question people actually ask, which is whether a morning flight works at all. It does not. A 9:00 AM domestic would want a Santa Fe sailing around midnight, and even a 1:00 PM one wants about 4:30 AM - there is no crossing at either hour. So any morning or early-afternoon flight means crossing back the day before and sleeping mainland-side, in Cebu City or on Mactan, which turns the last leg into a short airport run.
