How do I get from Moalboal to Hagnaya Port for Bantayan Island?
Short answer
Moalboal to Hagnaya is the length of Cebu’s west coast in one drive: roughly 175 km and about 5-6 hours by private car, north from the Moalboal junction through Barili, out to the coast at Toledo, then up through Balamban, Tuburan and Tabuelan to Hagnaya port in San Remigio. From Hagnaya it is the ferry across to Santa Fe on Bantayan, roughly an hour on the water.
The road is the same one the southbound trip uses, but the trip is not the same problem. Going south, the ferry has already happened and the drive simply ends at your hotel. Going north, the drive ends at a port - and you have to still be in time for a sailing when you get there. Sailings run frequently from early morning until early evening rather than once or twice a day, but since March 2026 the board is no longer fixed: the Cebu Port Authority and the shipping lines suspend Hagnaya operations around high tide, because the 30 September 2025 earthquake dropped the berth far enough that seawater covers the loading area at high water. The last usable departure therefore moves day to day with the tide cycle, not just with the weather - which on a 5-6 hour drive is the whole planning problem. No direct service up the coast. The practical public route backtracks through Cebu City: a bus from Moalboal to the South Bus Terminal, across the city to the North Bus Terminal, then a Ceres bus to Hagnaya, and only then the ferry. Cheap, but two terminal changes with luggage before you have even reached the water.
When Hagnaya port is open, and what to expect at the gate

- Hagnaya (San Remigio) to Santa Fe on Bantayan, roughly 1-1.5 hours by RORO. There is no direct boat from Cebu City - the drive north to the port is the first half of the journey
- High tide
- The Cebu Port Authority said in March 2026 that it had agreed with the shipping lines to suspend Hagnaya operations during high tide, so departures move with the tide cycle rather than running to a fixed board
- Why
- The magnitude 6.9 earthquake of 30 September 2025 tilted the berth and dropped it far enough that seawater washes over the loading area at high water. The port stays in use between tides; it is the loading area, not the route, that is affected
- Repair status
- Still open at the last reporting we can find (June 2026). The geohazard study covering the damaged northern ports was due to report in November 2026, reconstruction was to be folded into the port authority’s 2027 budget once it did, and San Remigio had been told to nominate a fallback site in case the pier cannot safely be rebuilt where it stands. Treat the tide rule as the situation for this trip, not a temporary notice about to be lifted
- Second port
- Kawit port in Medellin, further north, also runs to Santa Fe and is used as the alternative when Hagnaya is awkward. It was damaged in the same earthquake
- Operators
- Island Shipping and Super Shuttle Ferry run the Hagnaya crossing; Aznar Shipping is named on the Kawit sailings. Tickets are bought at the port, in cash
- This is the single thing to settle before the car leaves Cebu City: on this route the boat, not the drive, sets the departure time - and since March 2026 the boat moves with the tide. We confirm the day’s sailings with the shipping line before we set out and time the pickup to a named departure, which on a 3-4 hour drive is the difference between a beach afternoon and a night in San Remigio.
- Published last departures from Hagnaya disagree - about 4:30 PM and about 5:30 PM both appear in current guides - so we are not printing a time we cannot stand behind. What every source agrees on is to be at the port by mid-afternoon, and the hour you set out depends on where you set out from: from Cebu City be moving by about 1:00 PM on the 3-4 hour drive, from Mactan-Cebu airport land by about 11:00 AM because the run is 4-4.5 hours and you clear arrivals first, and from Moalboal be on the road by about 10:00 AM on the 5-6 hour drive, though on that one we advise a dawn start because you are furthest from a second chance. Earlier in the wet season in every case.
- The tide constraint applies coming back as well. If you are on a flight out of Cebu the day you leave the island, build the buffer on the Bantayan side rather than the Cebu side - a missed morning boat is recoverable, a missed check-in is not.
- None of this closes Bantayan. Santa Fe has been open for business throughout, ferry operations through both Hagnaya and Kawit were reported normal within weeks of the quake, and the island itself is unaffected - the friction is at the mainland pier, and it is a timing problem rather than a safety one.

What time should I leave Moalboal to catch the Bantayan ferry?
On the road by about 10:00 AM is the arithmetic, and a dawn start around 6:00 AM is what we actually advise. Here is the difference between those two numbers, because it matters. The published advice for a Cebu City start is to be moving by about 1:00 PM, and on a 3 to 4 hour drive that puts you at Hagnaya by around 4:00 PM. Your drive is 5 to 6 hours and about 175 km, the longest road approach to this port we run, so holding that same 4:00 PM arrival means leaving around 10:00 AM rather than 1:00 PM. The city figure is not your figure and using it would have you at the port towards dusk. We advise earlier than the arithmetic because the cost of being wrong is not the same for you: a traveller who misses the boat out of Cebu City is 3 to 4 hours from home and a choice of hotels, and you are 5 to 6 hours from yours. A 6:00 AM pickup is what turns this into arriving with sailings still to choose from, and in the wet season we would start earlier again. Either way it is a target rather than a deadline, because there is no fixed last boat to count back from: published last departures disagree, about 4:30 PM and about 5:30 PM both appear, and since March 2026 the port authority and the shipping lines pause Hagnaya operations around high tide, so the usable board moves day to day. Can I go straight from Moalboal to Bantayan Island without going back through Cebu City?
Yes, and that is the point of the private transfer: one continuous drive up the west coast to Hagnaya instead of a bus-terminal day in the city. Public transport has no direct coastal service, so it backtracks through Cebu City and changes terminals.
What happens if I reach Hagnaya after the last sailing?
You would be looking for a room near the port in San Remigio rather than on the beach at Santa Fe. That is why we plan this direction around the crossing, and why the tide matters: a boat you could have caught last week may not sail at the same hour today. If the day’s tide makes Hagnaya awkward, Kawit port in Medellin further up the north coast also sails to Santa Fe, with Aznar Shipping named on those crossings - it is the usual alternative rather than a guaranteed one, and it was damaged in the same earthquake. On the busiest dates, Holy Week above all and long weekends, ferries and vehicle slots fill up and queues at Hagnaya build, so an early start matters more than usual.

Do you book the whale sharks or the canyoneering for us, or do we buy those on the day?
The drive, the driver and the waiting time are ours and they are in the quote. Whatever is sold at the far end is bought there: whale-shark watching is registered in person at the Oslob desk and cannot be booked ahead by us or by anyone, canyoneering is booked on the day with the licensed Alegria operators, and falls entrances and the Moalboal environmental fee are paid at the gate. The exception is Sumilon, where the day-use pass must be reserved with the resort before you travel. So the thing worth getting right in the quote is the arrival time rather than a reservation, and that is the part we plan. How much notice do you need - can I book this for tomorrow?
Usually yes. There is no minimum notice on this route and no cut-off hour, so a request for tomorrow, or for later today, is worth sending rather than writing off. What settles it is whether a vetted driver is free for the time you need, and you will have the answer and the price by email the same day, usually within a few hours. A very early start is routine here rather than a complication. The part that gets harder with less notice is choice - holding a particular vehicle size or an exact pickup hour - not whether the journey can happen, so send the date and, if the timing is tight, the hour you need to be moving.
Do I pay anything up front, and when do I pay the rest?
