Short answer

There is no direct boat from Bohol to Malapascua. The move is three legs in sequence: the OceanJet fast ferry from Tagbilaran to Cebu City Pier 1, about 2 hours; then a long drive north up Cebu to New Maya port, about 133 km and 4-4.5 hours; then the public outrigger boat across to Malapascua, about 30-40 minutes. Allow 9-11 hours door to door once you add the transfer to Tagbilaran port, ferry check-in and the handoffs.

This is the second half of the Visayas dive circuit - finishing Alona, Balicasag and the Chocolate Hills, then heading north for the pre-dawn thresher shark dives at Monad Shoal. It is the longest single move on that circuit, and it is the one people most often get wrong, because the two ends run on different clocks.

The constraint is the Maya boat, not the ferry. Outrigger boats to Malapascua run through the day and stop in the late afternoon, while ferries from Tagbilaran run until the evening. That asymmetry means a late ferry strands you on the Cebu mainland with the island in sight. To do this in one day you need an early-morning sailing out of Tagbilaran - not a mid-morning one.

Ferry and outrigger tickets are fixed public fares bought at the terminal or online and sit outside our quote. What we arrange is the long middle leg: a private air-conditioned car or van meeting your ferry at Pier 1 and running you straight to New Maya port, timed to a daytime boat, with room for dive bags.

Step by step: Bohol to Malapascua Island

  1. 1
Get to Tagbilaran port for an early sailing

Work backwards from the Maya boat, not forwards from your checkout. BookBohol.com arranges the Bohol-side transfer from Panglao, Anda or your resort to Tagbilaran port so it matches the sailing you have chosen.

  2. 2
Cross to Cebu City Pier 1

The OceanJet fast ferry reaches Pier 1 in about 2 hours. Check in 30 to 60 minutes before departure with your ID. Tickets are a fixed public fare bought at the port or online.

  3. 3
Meet your driver at Pier 1 and head north

A private transfer meets the ferry with your name, so there is no taxi to negotiate with dive gear on the pavement. The road leg runs north through Bogo, Medellin and Daanbantayan to New Maya port - about 133 km and 4-4.5 hours.

  4. 4
    Take the outrigger to Malapascua

A roughly 30-40 minute crossing from New Maya port to the island. Boats run through the day and stop in the late afternoon, so this is the leg your whole schedule has to clear. Resorts and dive shops are a short walk or trike from the beach landing.

Ways to travel, compared

  • Pier 1 pickup + private transfer to Maya (what we arrange)~4-4.5 hrs road

We meet your ferry at Cebu City Pier 1 and drive you straight to New Maya port in a private air-conditioned vehicle, timed to a daytime boat, with space for dive gear and luggage. Fixed, all-in price - request a quote. The ferry and the outrigger are separate public fares.

  • OceanJet fast ferry, Tagbilaran to Pier 1~2 hrs

The crossing everyone takes off Bohol. Sailings run through the day at roughly 30 to 45 minute intervals from early morning until the evening, at a fixed public fare. For a same-day run to Malapascua you want one of the first sailings. Confirm current times before you travel.

  • Maya to Malapascua outrigger~30-40 min

Public outrigger boats cross from New Maya port through the day, roughly hourly, and stop in the late afternoon. This is the hard cut-off on the whole journey.

  • Ferry + buses via the North Bus Terminal~11+ hrs total

The budget version: ferry to Pier 1, taxi or ride-hail across the city to the Cebu North Bus Terminal, a Ceres bus to Maya, then the boat. Cheapest, but three handoffs with luggage before the crossing - and the one that most often misses the last boat.

Bohol to Malapascua Island: FAQs

Is there a direct ferry from Bohol to Malapascua?

No. Malapascua sits off Cebu’s northern tip and has no Bohol sailing of its own. You cross from Tagbilaran to Cebu City Pier 1 on the fast ferry, about 2 hours, drive north to New Maya port, about 133 km and 4-4.5 hours, then take the outrigger boat across, about 30-40 minutes.

Can I get from Bohol to Malapascua in one day?

Yes, but only on an early-morning ferry. The outrigger boats from Maya stop in the late afternoon, so the whole day is governed by that cut-off, not by the ferry schedule. Take one of the first sailings out of Tagbilaran and you reach the island comfortably; leave Tagbilaran late morning and you are likely overnighting on the Cebu mainland.

How long does Bohol to Malapascua take in total?

Allow 9-11 hours door to door: the transfer to Tagbilaran port, 30 to 60 minutes of ferry check-in, about 2 hours on the fast ferry, 4-4.5 hours by road from Pier 1 to New Maya port, and a 30-40 minute boat to the island, plus the handoffs in between.

What happens if I miss the last boat to Malapascua?

You stay on the mainland and cross in the morning. That is a real outcome on this route rather than a warning we invented, and it is why we time the Pier 1 pickup around a specific boat. If your ferry lands too late to make the crossing safely, tell us in the quote request and we will plan the stop rather than let you discover it at the port.

Does the quote include the ferry and the outrigger?

No. Our quote covers the private road transfer from Cebu City Pier 1 to New Maya port. The ferry and the Malapascua boat are fixed public fares set by their operators and bought at the terminal or online, so we do not mark them up or invent numbers for them. Tell us your sailing and we will time the drive to it.

Who arranges the transfer on the Bohol side?

BookBohol.com handles the resort to Tagbilaran port leg, including Panglao, Alona Beach and longer runs such as Anda. We cover the Cebu side; they cover theirs, so the pier is the only join in the trip.

Can I bring dive gear?

Yes, and most people on this route are carrying it. Tell us your bag count and whether you have tanks or bulky kit when you request the quote and we will send a vehicle with the right luggage space - it is a long run north and the wrong vehicle shows up quickly.

Can you do the return trip, Malapascua Island back to Bohol?

Yes - we meet your ferry at the pier and drive you back to Bohol, the same road leg in reverse. The crossing stays your own booking, as on the way out. Ask for both legs in one quote request and we price them together.
